These butterflies are very easily overlooked, as they are inconspicuous. When they land they rarely rest with their wings open, so getting pictures of their uppersides is difficult. I eventually managed it on a cloudy day, when I found a specimen who was desperate to soak up whatever ultraviolet might be around.
I tend to find that I use both their common names. When I’m following one, hoping it will pose for photos, I tend to think of it as a Dusky Knight. Then when the blasted thing disappears without me being able to get any pictures the name Dingy Ring comes to mind!
