Trapezites macqueeni (Bronze Ochre)

Other Common Names

Macqueen’ Skipper

Notes

All my sightings of this species come from the same location –  a small hill across the road from Specimen Hill at Herberton.  The first was a female I saw  quite late in the afternoon in April 2011, and she was basking in the sunshine. When disturbed she flew slowly a few meters and settled again; the only time she showed much energy was when she flirted briefly with a Trapezites iacchus who was also living along the same track.

I didn’t see another one until February 2020, when a couple of males posed at the top of that little hill on a very overcast and miserable day. I saw some more males under somewhat better weather conditions in April 2021, and I also my second female on a flower at the bottom of the hill. I cautiously approached to get a photo, but I needn’t have bothered stalking her because she wasn’t going anywhere – she’d been caught by a crab spider.
