Notes
I first photographed this at the side of the path in a low grassy area near Cairns. I must admit to being rather underwhelmed, as it wasn’t the most attractive butterfly I’d ever seen. It wasn’t until over a decade later that I photographed this species again, at the Townsville Palmetum. I saw better specimens this time, but by far my best encounter with amalia was at East Point in Darwin, where I found about 20 of them on and around a small clump of bushes, feeding from the flowers and posing on the leaves. They included some very fresh butterflies, who were a very agreeable orange colour.
