When I finally got to see this species, on my 4th trip to Cairns, I was surprised at how inconspicuous it is. From the photos I’d seen, I had imagined it would be
very easy to spot. It wasn’t. It flies low and fast, and is easily lost against the ground colour.
Since that first sighting I have seen this butterfly several times on my trips to the northern parts of Australia, but I have few photos to show for it. I’ve found them to be infuriating subjects for photography, as they frequently pose beautifully with their wings wide open right up until I’m not quite close enough to take the shot, at which point they fly off. I swear at them quite a lot…
