Hypolimnas misippus (Danaid Eggfly)

Notes

I had hoped to find this butterfly on my first visit to Darwin in April 2018, but I didn’t see it. However, on my second visit in April 2024 I saw a female in the East Point Reserve within a few hours of getting off the plane from Sydney.  She flew close by me and settled on the underside of a leaf; whilst I wasn’t able to get a great shot I was thrilled as this was one of my Holy Grail butterflies.

Two days later I saw another female at Buffalo Creek and at least two more at East Point, and the following day there were 3 males hilltopping at Mount Burrell  (a.k.a. Burrell’s Trig). Finally, on my penultimate day in Darwin, I saw maybe a dozen around the perimeter of the Leanyer Sewage Ponds, including some wonderful fresh males and females.  One of the females had deformed wings on the left side, but the others were absolutely gorgeous.
