Freyeria putli (Jewelled Grass-blue)

Other Common Names

Grass Jewel

Notes

Probably the smallest butterfly species I’ve ever seen I think this is a really cute little beastie. They’re so small and unobtrusive that they’re easily overlooked. The first time I found them I stumbled on them whilst I was following a different butterfly, which happened to fly up a bank where a number of these tiny Jewels were flying.

It’s such a small species that I had difficulty getting shots of them in focus, though this was partly due to the fact that the weather was overcast most of the time I was in Cairns in April 2006, so the light was not very good.
